As progress on the Levelling Up Bill stalls, Rishi Sunak has dropped compulsory housing targets for local areas.
This comes after a rebellion of 100 MPS threatened to back an amendment that aimed to scrap mandatory housing targets for councils. With Mr Sunak's decision to make housing targets advisory rather than mandatory, councils will now be permitted to build fewer homes if they can demonstrate that meeting the housing goal would change the character of an area.
