New Year Honours awarded to local government workers

Figures across local government have been recognised for their response to the pandemic in the 2021 New Year Honours list.

Figures across local government have been recognised for their response to the pandemic in the 2021 New Year Honours list.

Former interim chief executive at Sunderland City Council, Irene Lucas, was made a dame for her services to training, education and young people while a knighthood was awarded to David Pearson, lately director of adult social care at Nottinghamshire CC, for services to health and social care integration.

Chief executive of Newcastle City Council, Pat Richie, was awarded a CBE for her services to local government and public service reform.

Director of adult social care at Birmingham City Council, Professor Graeme Betts, was awarded a CBE for services to adult social care.

Chair of St Helens MBC's children's improvement board, Linda Clegg, who was previously director of children's services at Blackburn with Darwen Council, was honoured with an OBE for her long history of work ensuring young people have the best start in life.

Former auditor general for Scotland, Caroline Gardner, Northamptonshire CC finance commissioner Brian Roberts and Coventry City Council's principal social worker in children's services, Lee Pardy-McLaughlin, were also awarded OBEs. 

Northumberland Council's former service director for adult social care, Stephen Holmes, was awarded an MBE for his pivotal role during COVID-19. 

Council chief executive, Daljit Lally, said: 'Stephen has dedicated his career to looking after and caring for those who need it most, and his work will leave a lasting legacy.'

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: ‘In a year when so many have made sacrifices to protect our NHS and save people's lives, the outstanding efforts of those receiving honours today are a welcome reminder of the strength of human spirit, and of what can be achieved through courage and compassion.

'The 2021 New Year Honours offer us an opportunity to salute their dedication, and recognise many who have gone above and beyond in their contribution to our country.'
