Hospital trusts are looking to cut up to 10% of their beds and reduce staff numbers in a bid to meet tough efficiency targets.

The trusts hope that cutting beds will enable them to make savings of up to 7.8% from their budgets. The Department for Health has made it clear that the NHS must make up to £20bn of efficiency savings by 2015.
