Use housing benefit cash to fund new homes, GMB demands

Government should invest half the money spent on housing benefit into building new social homes, the GMB general secretary demands.

The Government should invest half the money spent on housing benefit into building new social homes, the GMB Congress has heard.

GMB is calling for the Government to stop ‘subsidising' private landlords and invest money on new housing for affordable rent.

It says that if half the £23bn that was spent on housing benefit in 2011-12 was spent on new housing, more than 80,000 new homes could be built each year.
