SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP OF MUNICIPAL AUTHORITIES

The impact of ending the Household Support Fund would be disastrous

The Household Support Fund is a crucial way for councils to help residents with the costs of living and should be top priority in the upcoming Budget, says Cllr Sir Stephen Houghton.

Sigoma authorities represent many of the most disadvantaged communities in the country – our membership includes eight of the top 10 most deprived upper-tier authorities based on the Indices of Multiple Deprivation. This means that the Household Support Fund is especially vital for our members in supporting their communities.

The Household Support Fund is a vital source of funding for local authorities to help their residents with the costs of living. The Fund enables local authorities to design and deliver support that is tailored to the needs of their local communities. It has helped hundreds of thousands of households across the Sigoma membership, whether that be through ‘warm welcome' community venues in Derby, a School Food Grant offering more children free healthy snacks, breakfast clubs and subsidised meals to vulnerable children in Blackburn with Darwen, or foodbank provision in Kirklees and support for low-income households with food in Southampton.
