An inflammatory situation

While fixing the cladding scandal may be a bitter pill for ministers to swallow, by not addressing it now, in full, we only create a false economy, says Sir Bob Neill.

Despite three significant financial interventions from the Government in as many years, the cladding scandal remains far from resolved. Millions of leaseholders continue to live in fear and anguish, working and home-schooling throughout the pandemic in unsafe buildings, all the time amassing devastating, and for many, debilitating, levels of debt to put right defects that were never their fault.

The size and legal complexity of this problem would prove a tough nut to crack on any Government's watch, let alone during both a pandemic and a significant economic recession, but that is no excuse for a delay to, or a dilution of, what has been everyone's goal throughout: to make all homes safe.
