SOCIAL CARE

A journey starts with a single step

Places like North Yorkshire have never been well funded by governments, according to Richard Webb. He says we will need to see the final departmental settlement detail of the spending round announcements, but at first look the news is very welcome.

Amid the Brexit drama at Westminster, this week's spending round announcement by the Chancellor was, unusually, almost a Fringe event. Yet, for many millions of people across the country, Sajid Javid's statement was much more than a sideshow.  An extra £13.8 billion promised in day to day spending. More money for people who are rough sleepers, children with special educational needs, schools, buses, air quality. Increases to the Better Care Fund, a roll-over year for the Improved Better Care Fund and the various social care grants. The list goes on.

We need to see the detail in the final departmental settlements but, at first glance, this news is very welcome.
