For most of us, the criminal justice and prison system isn't something we encounter every day.

While occasionally a major incident or court case that has garnered some public following may work its way on to the news, it otherwise operates on the periphery, enjoying little of the importance or concern we typically associate and attach to schools, hospitals and other things that affect our daily routine.
