Kid's care on a cliff edge

Following a report by ADCS that initial contacts made to children’s social care have increased by 78% over 10 years, Martin Ford finds out how council specialists are addressing the pressures to keep delivering as budgets dwindle

All eyes are on the Government ahead of the imminent social care Green Paper and next year's Spending Review to help beleaguered social workers cope with soaring demands.

Chancellor Philip Hammond's stopgap pledge of £410m for adult and children's social care next year and a further £85m for children's services over five years for the worst affected areas will not cover a budget gap that is on course to exceed last year's total of £800m.
