Know your stats

In a world where we are besieged by more data than ever, we need to get more comfortable with numbers, says Ben Page.

In this week's newspapers you will see lots of politicians quoting statistics. Most of them will be ignored or regarded with suspicion by the public.

Only 8% trust a politician's use of stats to make a point (and only 23% of you trust pollsters like me). What would you be prouder of – if your son or daughter excelled at reading and writing, and was highly literate – or was brilliant at maths?
