The law of unintended consequences and the 'bedroom tax'

Deborah Stephenson comments on the Commons Work and Penions Committee report on housing costs in the reformed welfare system.

Amid the controversy and coverage inspired by the one year anniversary of the bedroom tax, it was welcome to see some considered recommendations and solutions to the disproportionate impacts of welfare reform on disabled people.

Well timed calls from MPs on the influential cross-party Work and Pensions Select Committee must be heard loud and clear by all local authorities. Councils are fully aware of the pressure that benefit cuts are placing on their own resources and, more importantly, on vulnerable local people.
