Learn to dance in the rain

A bolder strategy is required to ensure that our health and social care services can respond appropriately to the changing needs of our communities, argues David Pearson

The implementation of the Care Act is the most significant change in social care legislation in the last 60 years. It has replaced a historical ragbag of legislation – some of it dating back to the poor law – with a single modern statute that reflects 21st century needs and values.

Financial sustainability involves finding the best ways to save money, but at the same time being clear about the need for a sustainable future. The question that sometimes gets asked is: ‘can we afford the Care Act?'
