There is little local government fat left to trim

Rob Whiteman is worried the chancellor will look on an already-stretched local government sector as easy pickings to help pay for his £43bn tax cuts. 'Local authorities need to prepare for the worst.'

Independent institutions set up by Parliament to provide advice and assurance on spending plans should not be seen as things that get in the way of Government business.

If the last few weeks have shown us anything, it is the vital role these institutions play.
