Before looking ahead, it is worth reflecting on the city's journey over the past quarter of a century. Back in 1999, the Greater London Authority Act led to the creation of the London Assembly and Mayor of London. A year later, Ken Livingstone was elected Mayor – since then, there have been five subsequent elections, with 2 May becoming the seventh.
