Managing the tightrope

Given the knife-edge on which council budgets are currently balanced, the 20% of uncertainty local authorities face could be the difference between failure or survival, says Adele Taylor.

Uncertainty is a watchword for all of us who work in local government and an almost near constant state we work in.

For finance colleagues and peers, the time between now and the end of the calendar year is probably when we most feel this, given we are all trying to prepare draft budgets and medium-term financial plans in the absence of certainty around our financial future.
