Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) borrowed almost £500m to end a private finance initiative (PFI) contract that had more than a decade left to run, it has been revealed.

GMWDA borrowed £488m from public sector bodies to buy itself out of a 25-year PFI contract held with Viridor Laing after just nine years.
