Mapping the future

Digital maps are helping cities become smarter, says Michael Harrell.

Urbanisation is shaping our world, with 57% of the global population currently residing in cities – a figure projected to rise to 68% by 2050. Cities already generate over 80% of global GDP, highlighting urbanisation's potential to drive sustainable growth when managed effectively.

 However, rapid urban growth also brings significant challenges, including increased traffic congestion, higher pollution levels, and greater demands on infrastructure and public services. Cities are also at the heart of the climate crisis, accounting for over 70% of global CO2 emissions, according to the IPCC.
