The measure of success is a shift in how councillors are viewed

Many across the sector have welcomed the announcement of proposals to review the standards regime for councillors, says Mo Baines. But successful implementation of the proposed changes will not be the end game, she warns.

At the recent Local Government Association conference, deputy prime minister Angela Rayner not unsurprisingly announced proposals to review the standards regime for councillors, alongside allowing councils to meet remotely and removing the requirement for councillors' addresses to be published. Many across the sector welcomed these announcements.

Recent Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) research with the University of Staffordshire and De Montfort University, found 85% of councillors suffered harassment or abuse.
