We cannot miss this public health opportunity

The transfer of public health back to local government is a huge opportunity for councils to reclaim their leadership role in this vital sector - but only if its embedded across all departments, says Sandra Whiles.

Local government is finally on the brink of reclaiming its leadership role in public health, and it's an opportunity we can't afford to pass up.

We all know that to achieve a 'whole-system' approach to public health – one that brings the full weight of all local government and health services together – changes will need to go far beyond tinkering with the role and reporting arrangements of the director of public health, transferring staff and allocating budgets.
