The return of public health to local government

District councils can understand the health issues facing their communities, says Sandra Whiles.

Current changes under way in the UK health system offer great opportunities for local government to make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of local people.

A lot of focus has been placed on the return of public health to local government. And while directors of public health (DPH) may be based in county and unitary councils, they will need to work with, influence and gain the support of district councils, if we are to make a difference collectively.
