The chair of the National Audit Office (NAO) has predicted the organisation will become increasingly important to local government chiefs.

Speaking at The MJ's Future Forum today, Lord Bichard insisted the NAO would not replace the Audit Commission when it is abolished next week but that the six to seven value for money studies on local government would be important.

He said: ‘We need to earn our credibility to you.
