NAO blames council audit backlog for failure to sign off Government accounts

The Government's financial accounts have failed to be signed off for the first time due to ‘severe backlogs' in English local authority audits.

Head of the National Audit Office, Gareth Davies, said he was forced to issue a ‘disclaimed' audit opinion on the 2022-23 whole of government accounts (WGA) after just over 10% (43) of England's 426 local authorities submitted reliable data.
