The surprises don't stop coming. We are now probably not far off seeing the Conservatives concluding a deal with the Democratic Unionists to stay in power. This moment, where a party representing one part of the United Kingdom has such crucial influence, is a critical moment for local government.

The DUP is determined to secure more investment, a softer approach to Brexit, and an easing of austerity in Northern Ireland. That's not a bad platform for government – but ministers in Westminster should offer those concessions not just in Northern Ireland, but across the UK, to all devolved nations and to local government. I do not believe that we should hold the Government to ransom, but we need to advocate for local government, as the devolved government and parties will doubtless advocate for their communities. Public services in every part of the country need extra funding, and it is only fair that all parts receive the necessary support.
