NI councils handed powers to vary taxes

New legislation at Stormont will allow councils in Northern Ireland to vary the rate of council tax and business rates.

New legislation at Stormont will allow councils in Northern Ireland to vary the rate of domestic and business rates.

Northern Ireland finance minister, Conor Murphy announced the changes at a meeting with Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) chair, Cllr Matt Garrett, alongside plans to postpone the deadline for rate setting.
