Many years ago, I interviewed the Liverpool councillor and chair of the police commission into the 1981 Toxteth riots, Margaret Simey.

At 94 years old, she looked down from the window of her home, overlooking Toxteth and said: ‘Of course they rioted. What else could they do.' Protest was the only option.
