Young people 'biggest losers' from current children's services system, say councils

Thousands of youngsters were placed in council care more than 20 miles away from their home last year due to a lack of available alternatives, a report has revealed.

Thousands of youngsters were placed in council care more than 20 miles away from their home last year due to a lack of available alternatives, a report has revealed.

The research from the County Councils' Network and consultancy Impower found an increasing number of young people who come into local authority care were being placed in children's residential homes far away from where they live due to demand outstripping supply and foster carer capacity flatlining.
