There is no perfect method

'Fair funding' looks to be provoking arguments similar to two bald men fighting over a comb, but reductions in spending estimates for some of the most deprived authorities are not a good look, says Ben Page.

Life isn't fair. This is likely to be the conclusion of many authorities when they see the practical outcome of the Government's Fair Funding Review.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies says ‘it is likely to lead to lower spending needs estimates for councils currently assessed to have the highest needs'. Of course, however you decide to allocate money to local government, it will always involve subjective judgement. There is no perfect method.
