For a long time, fans of Premier League football clubs have been banned from standing to watch the game. This rule followed some disasters at football grounds a few decades ago where many fans were killed in appalling crushes.
Standing was deemed to be a powder keg waiting to go off if panic, hooliganism or bad policing occurred. For many, a ban was acceptable. Who wants to stand all the way through a football match or any other event these days, anyway? Most were very content to sit.
