What can the new PM do on the cost of living crisis?

The Government will need to do more to support people through the winter – not just those on the lowest incomes, says Rob Whiteman. 'The cost of doing nothing will be too great to bear.'

The new Prime Minister will have a full in tray when he or she takes office in Downing Street for the first time. Of course, living through the biggest squeeze in living standards in more than 40 years is likely to result in a few things to add to their to-do list.

The cost of living crisis shows no sign of letting up – with energy costs projected to hit £4,000 per year and UK inflation having now reached double digits, all eyes will be on what the new PM will do.
