The polling unknowns

The greatest fear of critics is that rather than achieving the stated aim of promoting more trust in the electoral system, voter ID requirements could have the opposite effect. Martin Ford reports.

Election time is often a period of trepidation. This year, however, it is not just the candidates vying for victory who are nervous.

Returning officers and their teams are racing to implement the first wave of changes brought in by the Elections Act 2002. The most contentious element being rolled out for the first time this year is a new requirement for voters to show identification.
