In praise of a useful financial firebreak

A section s114 notice does not provide a ready-made solution to councils’ funding problems, but it is an important first step on the long and difficult road to redemption, says Iain Murray.

I increasingly feel local authorities have become victims of their own success. They should remain proud of their achievements despite the difficulties they have faced over the last decade. Punishing levels of fiscal austerity have impacted local government more than other parts of the public sector, with budgets slashed and services cut back.

Distress signals from local councils are ever increasing. And this should not come as a surprise.
