Under pressure from many directions

Last week’s Budget made optimistic assumptions about post-pandemic costs that could mean cuts in services like local government down the line, reports Michael Burton.

Last week's jam today, gruel tomorrow Budget skated over some alarmingly optimistic assumptions about the mounting pressures on the public finances which are likely to surface in the next Spending Review.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) warned in its economic and fiscal outlook that legacy costs of the pandemic and the backlog of non-virus public service activities like NHS operations and education could mean further cuts to non-protected departments such as local government.
