Proposals to bring back strategic planning have merit

A return of strategic planning across the country could fill the void between local and national policy, says Simon Edwards.

The new Government has been straight out of the blocks with its plans to grow the economy, and is banking on increasing housebuilding as a means to achieve this.

We await details on the chancellor's pledge on this in a revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), due imminently. While targets are unlikely to be a silver bullet, the County Councils' Network's (CCN) members are pragmatic. Proposals must be evidence-based and sensible and housing should not be overwhelmingly allocated to counties, with each part of the country building its fair share.
