Why the public prefer to believe Pickles

Are the cuts unveiled in the finance settlement a death knell for local government or are councils just crying wolf - and who does the public believe? asks Craig Dearden-Phillips.

Last week's announcement of an 8.5% cut in the central government grant almost sent local government world into occupy-mode.

Council leaders across the land took to the TV screens to announce the end of services as we know them, that all the fat is cut and that the most beseiged councils might well go bust.
