The public sector's dirty secret

Last week national statisticians revealed the numbers of people employed on controversial zero-hours contracts had increased by 20% to just under 700,000 – or 2.3% of those at work. Blair McPherson says the public sector must clean up its act.

The senior management team were experimenting with an open plan office. Senior managers were often still at a hot desk when others had gone home. So the cleaner had to clean around us. Our regular was a young girl called Helen. She told us her mother got her the job, her mother and father both worked as cleaners here in head office.

She still lived at home. We progressed beyond ‘hello' to receive regular updates on her driving lessons and through out the summer we shared in the build up to her holiday in Mexico.
