A question of balance

Cllr Neil Clarke responds to the CLG Committee report into full business rates retention and calls for a dynamic balancing of needs, resources and stability that would best sustain local government finances.

The District Councils’ Network (DCN) welcomes the timely report from the CLG Committee, to which we contributed evidence, and is keen to ensure that the business rates system supports increased business growth.

As a network, we feel the new system must ensure funding stability for localities in the long-term so districts can continue to drive regional growth and deliver those services that residents value the most.

In their findings, the panel of MPs from the CLG Committee highlighted the clarity needed on what the quantum of 100% business rates retention actually means for the sector.
