Ray James: My priorities as NHS learning disabilities director

Having been seconded from a London borough to the NHS to become the first national learning disability director, Ray James sets out his priorities.

We all share a desire to help people with learning disabilities or autism to live the lives of their choosing in their local community and, at the same time, to reduce the use of in-patient settings.

In my new role of national learning disability director for NHS England, I hope to bring many years of local government experience, working in partnership with health colleagues, commissioners and providers, to make this a lasting reality.
