A ray of sunshine for Wigan

Actively engaging with the community has allowed Wigan MBC to economically solve many service problems, including boosting social care. Donna Hall explains

Sunshine House in Scholes is an aptly named community centre located in one of Wigan's less affluent areas – a neighbourhood where residents still face dark times due to the economic downturn.

The place buzzes with constant activity, community ambition and civic activism. It is home to everything from drop-in sessions for people with mental health issues through to Pilates classes and art workshops.

Sunshine House recently hosted a writers' festival with the likes of Anthony Horowitz and John Hegley working with local young people. A luncheon club for the elderly is held three times a week. Booking is recommended.
