Reorganisation: lessons from the past

With several councils heading for reorganisation, Martin Ford speaks to those who have already undergone the journey and assesses the benefits and difficulties of going unitary.

As Northamptonshire becomes the latest county council to embark on the road to reorganisation, what lessons can be learnt from those that have gone before it?

Somewhat reluctantly, the troubled council has effectively voted itself out of existence, in favour of proposals to form two unitary councils, between them covering the whole of Northamptonshire.
