Back to school: Give councils the powers they need

Place-based school planning and decision-making powers are currently not strong enough, argues Michael Bracey, so it’s time for the Government to empower councils to aid the schools.

It's that time of year again when hundreds of thousands of children across the country start at school or make the move to a brand new one.

And while the first day at school is a nerve-racking experience for both children and their parents, spare a thought for those local council school place planners who have had a similarly anxious time in the lead up to the new term.
