The controversial Scottish education bill has been put on hold after a compromise was brokered with councils.

Under the agreement between deputy first minister John Swinney and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA), headteachers will have greater powers over the day-to-day running of schools in a bid to raise standards and close the attainment gap between affluent and less-well off pupils.
