A sense of wellbeing

Ben Page considers how personal wellbeing in the UK has varied relatively little in the UK over the last 30 years.

As the prime minister, David Cameron, said: ‘Wellbeing can't be measured by money or traded in markets. Improving our society's sense of wellbeing is, I believe, the central political challenge of our lives.'

Now admittedly, this was in 2006, when he and chancellor, George Osborne, were both offering to match ex-PM Gordon Brown's spending on public services, before deficit reduction dominated.
