Some £500,000 per year could be saved by moving from five chief executives to one, according to unitary plans laid out by Somerset CC.

The county council has argued that ‘bringing together responsibilities and reducing duplication' could save a total of up to £28m a year and would ‘protect frontline services at a time of unprecedented financial pressures for all councils'.
