Spending reductions have 'taken a toll'

As the General Election campaign moves up a gear, Lord Bob Kerslake says the manifestos should be scrutinised to see if they recognise the need to restore local government funding.

The start of the General Election campaign has seen one consistent message – we are definitely at the end of the decade of austerity. All of the main political parties have committed to rewrite the fiscal rules to usher in a new era of investment in our public services.

In the UK, this in large part reflects the public's weariness with cuts, but also the urgent need to respond to the climate emergency and to rebuild our creaking infrastructure, particularly in the North.
