Sprinting instead of marathon preparation

There isn’t a united view on what unitary arrangements should look like for Gloucestershire, says Kathy O'Leary.

It's a marathon, not a sprint I'm training for, I reminded myself as I powered up Electric Avenue at Berkeley Green parkrun. The 5km course weaves around the Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park on the site of the decommissioned Berkeley nuclear power station, one of the first civil nuclear power stations in the world, on the western edge of Stroud district alongside the River Severn.

The science park was sold last year to Chiltern Vital Group, who have met us for early discussions about their plans to establish an internationally significant low-carbon energy super cluster there, incorporating the on-site South Gloucestershire and Stroud University Technical College. This is allied to Great British Nuclear's recent purchase of the former Oldbury site seven miles to the south towards Bristol.
