We recently marked the centenary of the death of Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist who became one of the pioneers of global philanthropy.

Perhaps Carnegie's most famous philanthropic act was his support for the provision of public libraries. Through his own investment, and through the charitable trusts and foundations that he set up, more than 2500 Carnegie libraries were built worldwide, including more than 600 in the UK and Ireland.
