Striving for a step change on local statistics

The Mayoral Data Council will provide a ‘unified voice’ in liaising with government departments. But delivering better partnership working across places calls for better quality data, according to experts. David Blackman reports

The area covered by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has a population of about three million and an economy worth £77bn.

In a national perspective that is ‘tiny, equating to around 3.5% of the UK economy', says Si Chun Lam, the WMCA's head of research, intelligence and inclusive growth.
