Most towns hit by unrest during the summer suffer from a ‘fraying' of social fabric, according to research.

Last week's report by the Power to Change charitable trust found 23 of the 27 areas affected performed below average for ‘social fabric' according to an index that measured relationships, economic value, physical infrastructure and positive norms, and takes into account factors such as housing, income, crime, family, neighbourliness and access to facilities.
