Supporting a more financially resilient sector

Rob Whiteman looks at CIPFA's eight assurance reviews of the councils that asked the Government for capitalisation directions, and reviews the common themes that emerged.

No one would deny how tough the last two years have been for local authorities. Budgets have changed due to COVID-19, with some areas overstretched and others seeing a fall in demand. Likewise, the wider pressure of inflation has increased all areas of service costs.

Last year, eight local authorities wrote to the Government and asked for capitalisation directions to accommodate this increasingly turbulent economic climate.
