Tackling skills shortages

It’s a candidate’s market, says Gordon McFarlane who argues that local government must also focus on succession planning, automating routine processes, and considering workers’ future requirements.

There is a lot of talk about the ‘Great Resignation'. We know that nationally across all sectors, there are around 1.2 million fewer people in the labour market, and for the first time, more vacancies than there are unemployed people.

It is a candidate's market with lots of options, and plenty of pay-related competition.
